Alt-A TRANSLATE TABLE EDIT ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The current character and its translation are displayed on the top line of the window. Use the arrow keys to change the selected character. By default, characters are NOT translated. Edit Commands: ⌡S⌠ Toggle the display between ASCII 0-127 and 128-255. ⌡SPACE⌠ Change current character translation. Type the new value at the prompt. To filter a character out, use a new value of zero. ⌡F10⌠ Save the changes. ⌡Esc⌠ Cancel and do not save changes. Alt-D MAIN MENU ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Dialing Directory commands are divided into 5 groups: ⌡Entries⌠ Commands affecting directory entries such as Dial, Revise, Clear or QuickLearn. ⌡Dial⌠ Commands which start the dialing process or exit the Dialing Directory. ⌡Edit⌠ Commands used to edit notes or script files linked to the current entry. ⌡FON⌠ Commands which manipulate the Directory itself such as Load, Print and Write. ⌡Movement⌠ Implied Commands/Keys used to navigate through the Dialing Directory. NOTE: All changes to the Dialing Directory are saved to disk immediately. When a Revise, Tag with Prefix, Clear, Sort operation is performed, the old version of the directory is saved under its current name with the .FBK extension. The last major change to the directory can be cancelled with the Ctrl-U Undo command. ────────────────────────────────── ENTRIES ──────────────────────────────── ⌡SPACE - Tag/Untag Single⌠ Pressing the space bar marks the current entry -- a tag character will appear to the left of the name field --. Entries must be tagged before certain commands, as described later. Any number of entries may be tagged at the same time. ⌡C - Clear Tagged⌠ Used to erase directory entries and/or the notes attached to them. A sub-menu is displayed when this command is issued, with online help available. ⌡E - Edit Prefixes⌠ Letters A through J may be used in conjunction with phone numbers to define additional information such as calling service account numbers or even alternate Modem dialing commands. The desired prefix and/or suffix letter is included within the entry's telephone number: A555-1212. In addition, prefixes may be used as Alternate Dialing Commands, if the prefix itself is preceded by an end quote character `. For further information on alternate dialing commands, see the Revise Prefix Help. ⌡Q - QuickLearn⌠ A Quicklearn-tagged entry causes Qmodem to create a customized Logon Script for that entry. The linked script is played back automatically thereafter, eliminating the manual-typed logon. ⌡R - Revise⌠ Allows editing of Dialing Directory information. All tagged entries will be edited. If no entries are tagged, editing will apply to the current entry. Press F10 to save the changes to disk immediately. ⌡T - Tag Multiple⌠ Tags entries based on number, number range, or contents. Prefix codes may be inserted or changed on the fly. To tag entries, type the entry numbers separated by spaces: 12 19 34 77. To tag entries based on their textual content, precede the text with the letter T: TChicago T312. To tag an entry and add a prefix on the fly, precede the entry number with the letter P: P32A add suffix A to entry 32 PC45 add prefix C to entry 45 PD78E add D prefix and E suffix to 78 NOTE: Tag w/prefix updates the directory, and a backup file is created prior to tagging. ⌡U - Untag All⌠ All tags are immediately removed. ───────────────────────────────── DIAL ──────────────────────────────────── ⌡ENTER - Start Dial⌠ If entries are tagged, they will be dialed in the order in which they were tagged. After a successful connection, that entry's tag will be removed. If no entries were tagged, the current entry will be dialed. ⌡M - Manual Dial⌠ Use this command to dial a number which is not in the directory. You will be prompted for the number to be dialed. Manual dialing is done outside the dial window and you will return to terminal mode after this command. ⌡ESC - Cancel/Exit⌠ Exits the Alt-D window and returns to terminal mode. ───────────────────────────────── EDIT ──────────────────────────────────── ⌡N - Edit Note⌠ Qmodem allows text notes to be attached to each directory entry. Notes are stored in standard text files with a QMODEM.xxx filename where xxx is a number from 1-200. This command allows creation/edit of the note file for the current directory entry. ⌡V - Edit Linked Script⌠ This command allows editing of the script linked to the selected entry. NOTE: The two edit commands above invoke Qmodem's built-in text editor. While editing a note or script, the editor's online help is available by pressing F1. ────────────────────────────────── FON ──────────────────────────────────── ⌡F - Find Text⌠ Use this command to search the dialing directory and Attached Notes for a specific text string. The first matching entry will become the current entry. ⌡A - Repeat Find⌠ Repeats the last Find command. The search will resume with the entry immediately following the current entry. NOTE: If the matching text is found in an Attached Note, Qmodem will display a status window to that effect. The N command may then be used to view the contents of the note where the match was found. ⌡L - Load⌠ Load an Alternate Dialing Directory. If the current Directory has been modified, but has not been saved, a prompt will be displayed allowing the current Directory to be saved. NOTE: The extension of .FON is required to insure compatibility with future versions of Qmodem. ⌡O - Other Info⌠ Directory Information Display toggle. This command alternates displayed data to allow complete viewing of entry information. ⌡P - Print⌠ Produce a listing of the Dialing Directory on a selected device or file. To print the listing, reply "PRN" or "LPT1" to the displayed prompt. To direct the listing to disk, enter a valid DOS filename. Entries with blank Name fields will not be listed. ⌡S - Sort⌠ Directory entries may be sorted by Name or Number in ascending sequence or by Total Calls in descending sequence. A Total Call sort causes the most frequently called numbers to appear at the top of the directory. NOTE: The phone directory is sorted intelligently in case-insensitive alphabetic order. Entries starting with an UPPER CASE letter will be sorted before entries with the same lower-case letter. Entries which do not start with a letter will be sorted in standard ASCII sequence. ⌡Ctrl-U - Undo⌠ Restores the Dialing Directory backup file which was created before the last major directory change. If a backup file does not exist, an appropriate error message will be displayed. Only the LAST major change can be undone. If you wish to experiment with various changes, consider making multiple copies of the QMODEM.FON file for backup purposes. FILE ALLOCATION WINDOW ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Type a valid filename in the form: DRIVE:\PATH\FILENAME.EXT Editing Commands: ^Left arrow - Previous Word ^Right arrow - Next Word Left arrow - Move Left One Character Right arrow - Move Right One Character Home - Jump to Beginning of Line End - Jump to End of Line Ins - Toggle INSERT/OVERSTRIKE Mode Del - Delete Character at Cursor BackSpace - Delete Character Left ENTER - End Editing ESC - Cancel and Exit This Function NOTE 1: File/directory defaults followed by an asterisk * in the Alt-N configuration menus can be overridden temporarily in the file allocation window. These overrides will remain in effect until 1) Qmodem is stopped and restarted or 2) A new default is specified with the Alt-N function. For additional information, see the help screens for the Alt-N/D and Alt-N/F commands. NOTE 2: Batch Download Protocols do NOT require file names. By definition, only a drive:\directory path specification is required for batch downloads. MEMORY REQUIREMENTS CHANGED ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Qmodem uses available RAM memory for the scrollback buffer, the internal editor, script variables, and download buffers. Memory is allocated based on the values specified in the program's configuration accessible with the Alt-N command. Memory is dynamically allocated when Qmodem starts; if changed, the new configuration cannot be implemented until Qmodem is restarted. When the new configuration is saved and Qmodem detects memory allocation changes, a window is displayed, allowing exit from Qmodem with the standard Y, N, and X options. lt-Y FILE DELETION REQUEST ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── After the file name to be deleted has been verified by Qmodem, the path/filename are displayed, as well as an opportunity to cancel the request. Replying "N" to the confirmation prompt will cancel the deletion request and return Qmodem to terminal mode. Replying "Y" to the confirmation prompt will proceed with the file deletion. If the file was deleted by mistake, it may be recovered with special programs such as Norton's Utilities, Mace Utilities, etc... Alt-O CHANGE DIRECTORY ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Alt-O displays two windows. The bottom window displays the active directory path. The left side window displays a list of subdirectories in that path to chose from. To change path to one of the displayed subdirectories, type its name at the cursor position and <Enter>. Standard editing commands can be used on the displayed path name, and the entire drive:\path may be changed as well. If the drive letter is changed, this will be reflected in subsequent Alt-L commands. Any drive:\path combination valid in the DOS CHDIR (CD) command can be specified. Alt-P SET COMMUNICATIONS PARAMETERS ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Serial parameters include speed, parity, data bits and stop bits. Default serial communications parameters are set with the Alt-N Qmodem Configurationcommand. Default parameters can be overridden in each entry in the Qmodem dialing directory. While in the COM parameter window, parameters are changed by typing the letter corresponding to the desired change. The current combination, displayed on the window's top line, will reflect the change immediately. Pressing ⌡ENTER⌠ will implement the changed parameters immediately. Pressing ⌡Esc⌠ will restore the previous parameters and return Qmodem to terminal mode. CAUTION: Communication parameters can be changed while offline or online. Online changes should only be attempted if the current parameters are known to be incorrect, unreadable characters are displayed on the screen, or the connection cannot be established properly. Alt-J FUNCTION KEY DEFINITION - DISPLAY WINDOW ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The function key display window shows all 48 function key combinations and their current values. Depending on shift state, each function key may hold up to four values. The data contained in each F-key combination may be a set of standard keystrokes such as name, password, or the special commands such as @SCRIPT, @EDIT, @DIAL, @SHELL, @SHELLX and @STAMP. Whenever a function key is pressed, the associated data is sent as if it had been typedon the keyboard, or the command or function associated with it is executed. Qmodem supports multiple F-Key assignment files. A new file may be loaded or created by pressing "L" while in the F-Key display window. Pressing a number from 1 to 4 will allow editing of the F-key values, as follows: 1 - Normal F-keys 2 - Shift F-Keys 3 - Ctrl F-Keys 4 - Alt F-Keys Pressing <Esc> will return Qmodem to terminal mode. NOTE: To access all 48 F-Key definitions requires an enhanced keyboard with 12 function keys. Only 40 definitions are available for keyboards with 10 function keys. Alt-J FUNCTION KEY DEFINITION - EDIT WINDOW ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The Function key edit window is displayed after the desired F-key combination has been selected from the F-key display window. To edit the value of an F-Key combination, use the Up/Dn arrows to move to the desired key definition. Within the definition field, standard editing functions are available and are displayed at the bottom of the screen. Two special characters can be used in the F-Key text: ^M Generates a <Return>, <Enter> or <CR> carriage return. ^~ Generates a half-second delay or pause. NOTE: The ^M and ^~ combinations are new in Qmodem 4.0; they replace the left brace { and single tilde ~ characters. When the desired F-Key entries are complete, F10 will save the new definitions. Pressing <Esc> cancels the Edit function and returns to the F-Key display window. NOTE: The reserved words @DIAL, @EDIT, @SCRIPT, @SHELL, @SHELLX and @STAMP can be used in F-Key definitions as follows: @DIAL x y z Dial Directory entries x y z @EDIT Invoke the internal/external editor (see Alt-N/F/V) @SCRIPT cmd Execute Script "cmd" @SHELL cmd Shell to DOS and execute "cmd" (prompts for key-press before returning to Qmodem) @SHELLX cmd Shell to DOS and execute "cmd" (returns immediately to Qmodem) @STAMP Add time/date stamp to the LOG file PgDn & Ctrl-PgDn SELECT DOWNLOAD PROTOCOL ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── When selecting the File Download function with the PgDn or Ctrl-PgDn command, Qmodem first displays the Protocol Selection Window. The protocol is the method of transfer of data between the sending and receiving computers. The same protocol must be selected in both computers or errors will result and the transfer will abort. Qmodem has fixed internal protocols and allows up to 10 external protocols. External protocols require setup and are described in more detail in the Qmodem manual and their own documentation. The following Internal protocols are available: ⌡(A) ASCII⌠ This is the simplest and least reliable protocol. Data received is not verified. This protocol is used for text transfers and cannot be used for binary file transfers such as .COM. .EXE, and .ARC files. ⌡(X) Xmodem Checksum⌠ This is the most popular protocol for binary file transfers because of its universal support. This protocol performs basic error-detection and recovery and has a 97% probability of error-free transfers. Xmodem transfers data in 128-byte blocks. ⌡(C) Xmodem CRC⌠ This protocol, similar to Xmodem, uses a better error detection and recovery technique and is more effective under poor line conditions, with a 99.7% probability of error-free transfer. ⌡(R) Xmodem Relaxed⌠ This protocol is almost identical to the standard Xmodem, but error detection timing is delayed to insure proper operation with online services such as CompuServe. ⌡(O) Xmodem-1k⌠ This protocol transmits data in 1024-byte blocks. Under normal conditions, it will transmit 10% faster than Xmodem. ⌡(Y) Ymodem (batch)⌠ This "true" Ymodem protocol allows multiple file transfers in a single operation. Most batch protocols contain file information and do not require that a filename be specified on the receiving computer. ⌡(F) Xmodem-1k/G⌠ Use of this protocol requires an error-correcting modem, or direct attachment of the computers with a null-modem cable. This protocol assumes that Flow Control between the two computers will be performed with computer-to-modem hardware handshake. ⌡(G) Ymodem/G (batch)⌠ This is the non-error-correcting version of the Ymodem Batch protocol. This protocol carries the same hardware flow control requirements as the (F) Xmodem-1k/G protocol. ⌡NOTE TO ZMODEM USERS:⌠ Qmodem 4.0 features "automatic Zmodem download" when the program is started with the /AUTOZ command-line parameter. In AUTOZ mode, Qmodem will recognize the Zmodem download header record and will immediately transfer control to your Zmodem download batch file without any intervention required on your part. PgUp&Ctrl-PgUp ASCII UPLOAD OPTION SELECT ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── When uploading a file using the ASCII protocol, three options are available: ⌡Prompted⌠ Qmodem will wait for a specific character to be received before it sends the next ASCII record. This option can be used when uploading text into a bulletin board's message base, for example. When this option is selected, the prompt character must be specified, such as a colon :. The SPACE may not be used as a prompt character. ⌡Time Delay⌠ Qmodem will wait for a specified period before sending the next ASCII record. The delay must be specified in hundredths of a second. (100=1 second). ⌡No Delay⌠ The ASCII data will be sent without any delays, as fast as possible. During the upload, the Qmodem screen will be split. The lower part of the screen shows the data sent to the remote computer, and the upper part of the screen shows the data received. NOTE: During ASCII Uploads, Qmodem uses the XON/XOFF protocol to insure proper flow control. PgUp&Ctrl-PgUp SELECT UPLOAD PROTOCOL ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── When selecting the File Upload function with the PgUp or Ctrl-PgUp command, Qmodem first displays the Protocol Selection Window. Shift-Tab ADD LINEFEEDS TO CARRIAGE RETURNS ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Some bulletin boards or online services do not add linefeed characters to carriage returns, which causes lines to be overwritten. Shift-Tab toggles the addition of a Linefeed (LF) character to each Carriage Return (CR) on and off to corrects this condition. Alt-Q SCRIPT QUICKLEARN ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── QuickLearn is Qmodem's automated Script Recorder. A Script is a program written in Qmodem Script Language, used to perform repetitive functions such as log on, file transfers or other utility functions. While in QuickLearn mode, Qmodem captures data as it is received from the remote system, as well as the corresponding local keyboard responses. The data is then used to build a Script File which, when executed, exactly replicates the interaction between the two systems as it took place originally. Alt-Q starts QuickLearn mode with a prompt for the name of the Script File to be created. Any DOS file name is valid, and Qmodem will automatically append the required .SCR extension to the script's file name. Script recording will then start. When the desired functions have been performed, pressing Alt-Q a second time will terminate the script recording and save the script file. The Script thus created can be recalled and executed with the Alt-F function. Alt-W DISPLAY DISK DIRECTORY ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The Alt-W command causes Qmodem to display the contents of the current directory one screen at a time, similar to the DOS DIR /P command. In addition, the list also shows an estimated file transfer time for each file. Alt-E ECHO (DUPLEX) TOGGLE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Echo, also called duplex mode, controls the display of local keystrokes on the local terminal. An incorrect echo setting will cause keystrokes to be displayed twice like HHEELLLLOO, or not to be displayed at all. In Full Duplex mode, the remote computer echoes keystrokes and local echo is not required. Alt-R DOS SHELL ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Shelling or Dropping to DOS temporarily suspends Qmodem and causes the standard DOS prompt to be displayed. Any valid DOS command can then be invoked such as DIR, COPY, FORMAT, etc.... Sufficient memory must be available in the system to allow this process since a second copy of COMMAND.COM must be activated to process the commands. During the Shell process, Qmodem still operates and captures incoming data in its buffer. If the Shell is active too long, incoming data may be lost. To return to Qmodem, type EXIT and <Enter>. NOTE: While in DOS Shell mode, DO NOT INVOKE RESIDENT PROGRAMS (TSR) such as ProKey, Sidekick, etc... Alt-T SCREEN DUMP ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The Screen Dump function copies the screen contents to a filename specified in the Alt-N/F menu. Screen text is added to the end of the file and includes Date and Time stamps. If the file does not exist, a prompt will be displayed to create it. Upon completion of the screen dump, Qmodem will beep and display a completion status window. Alt-Y DELETE A FILE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── This function will permanently delete a file. A valid DOS filename must be entered in response to the file deletion prompt. If the requested file is found, a confirmation prompt will be displayed. This is a powerful and unforgiving command; caution should be exercised or permanent loss of the file could result. Alt-U SCROLLBACK TOGGLE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The ScrollBack toggle controls the storage of data in the ScrollBack buffer, accessible with the Up-Arrow key. By default, Qmodem starts with the ScrollBack feature active. Alt-I INFORMATION ON QMODEM ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Alt-I displays an invoice form which may be used to register Qmodem officially. Should you experience any problems with Qmodem, send a letter to the Forbin Project, Inc. and include this information. Registration provides the best support possible, and enables the Forbin Project to constantly improve Qmodem. Alt-O CHANGE DIRECTORY ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The default Qmodem path is that which was in effect when the program was started. Alt-O will display the current drive:\directory path, as well as subdirectories directly accessible from the current path. The current path may be changed to any other path valid in a DOS CHDIR command. Alt-P SET COMMUNICATIONS PARAMETERS ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── This command is used to change serial port operating parameters including SPEED, PARITY, DATA BITS, and STOP BITS. Parameters may be changed by pressing the desired letter. Pressing [ENTER] alone retains previous setting and exits the Alt-P function. Alt-G TERMINAL EMULATION ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The Alt-G command displays a Terminal Emulation window which allows the selection of a new video terminal protocol. Supported protocols include: ANSI - ANSI Display standard VT100 - DEC VT100 terminal TTY - Passthru Teletype (no protocol) To change emulation mode, type the letter corresponding to the desired terminal type. The screen will be cleared and the new emulation mode will be displayed on the Status Line at the bottom of the screen. TTY Emulation is forced while in Split-Screen mode. Qmodem restores the prevailing terminal emulation upon exit from split-screen mode. Alt-K CHANGE COMMUNICATION PORT ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Qmodem can immediately switch between any one of eight communication ports on computer so equipped. The standard COM1 and COM2 ports are Qmodem defaults; port definitions beyond COM2 must be specified with the Alt-N/M/P configuration menu. To select a new serial port, type the desired number (1-8). Ports shown as "undefined" may not be selected. If the selected port is defined, but does not exist (ie, COM2), Qmodem will issue an error message, and a valid port will have to be re-selected with the Alt-K command. Alt-L CHANGE CURRENT DRIVE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Any valid DOS drive letter (A-Z) can be entered in response to the Alt-L command. The current drive is shown in the drive selection window. To change drive, type the desired drive letter. If the requested drive does not exist, a temporary error message will be displayed and the drive selection window will be re-displayed. If the selected drive is changed, that drive's root directory will become the new default directory. NOTE: Qmodem will issue an implied Alt-L command if the current drive designation was changed during an Alt-O command. Alt-X EXIT QMODEM ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── ***** YOU HAVE REQUESTED EXIT FROM QMODEM ***** Three options are available at this time: ⌡N⌠ DO NOT EXIT Qmodem. Select this option if Alt-X was pressed in error. Qmodem will return to terminal mode. ⌡Y⌠ Exit Qmodem. Qmodem will close the Session Capture and Log files, if opened, and exit to DOS. Qmodem returns to the default drive and directory active at the time the program was started. If a connection was active, it will be immediately terminated. ⌡X⌠ Terminate Qmodem without disconnecting the phone line. This option can be used to run another program, re-boot the computer, or when not enough free memory is available to use the Alt-R Shell to DOS command. After the needed function is performed, Qmodem can be restarted from the DOS prompt with a QMODEM /R command. Alt-A TRANSLATE TABLES ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Incoming and outgoing ASCII characters can be changed to other ASCII characters by editing the appropriate translate table. Unwanted characters can be eliminated or substituted to meet your specific requirements. Binary file transfers and XON/XOFF flow control are not affected by translate table settings. Alt-S SPLIT SCREEN MODE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── In Split-Screen mode, the screen is divided into two windows. The bottom window displays data entered locally, while the top windows displays data received from the remote system. Due to its method of operation, Split Screen Mode does not support terminal emulation and forces Qmodem to operate in TTY mode. While in Split Screen mode, local keystrokes are accumulated and are not transmitted until a carriage return is typed. Accumulated keystrokes are displayed on the top line of the lower window. NOTE: ^M is used in place of <RETURN>, <CR>, or <ENTER> to produce a carriage return. To return to full-screen operation, press Alt-S a second time. Qmodem automatically restores the terminal emulation to its previous setting. Alt-D DIALING DIRECTORY ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Phone numbers and related information are stored in the Qmodem Dialing Directory. Multiple Dialing Directories may be used, with up to 200 entries stored in each directory. QMODEM.FON is the default dialing directory. Alternate .FON files can be loaded as needed to provide access to another 200 numbers. Directory management features include adding/editing entries, printing the directory, sorting the directory, and searching entries based on their contents. In addition, text notes and scripts attached to specific directory entries can be edited while in the directory. Alt-F SCRIPT FILE EXECUTION ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Scripts are programs written in Qmodem's Script Language. They are used to automate or facilitate repetitive tasks such as logon, file transfers, etc... Type the desired Script file name in response to the first prompt, and any required script parameters in response to the second prompt. Press <Enter> in response to the second prompt if the script requires no parameters. The script will be loaded and will start executing following the second prompt response. Alt-G TERMINAL EMULATION ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Qmodem will display several popular video display terminal types. Special terminal emulation is usually required for communications with minicomputers or mainframes. The type of terminal emulation required is determined by the Host computer. Terminal emulation or TTY should be used. ANSI is used if the remote computer supports ANSI Color Graphics. NOTE: Qmodem's ANSI emulation is internal and does not require the DEVICE=ANSI.SYS command in the CONFIG.SYS file. Alt-H HANG UP ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The Hangup command causes the modem to go "on hook" and disconnect from the phone line immediately. The hangup command for the Hayes (tm) Smartmodem and compatibles is: ^~^~^~+++^~^~^~ATH^M Most modems can recognize the dropping of the DTR (Data Terminal Ready) signal as a way of disconnecting from the phone line. Modems can be set to hold the DTR signal active ("high") at all times. In this case, Qmodem cannot drop DTR to hang up. Alt-J FUNCTION KEY MACROS ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Repetitive keystrokes can be stored into Function Keys in each of four shift states, yielding 40 or 48 possible combinations depending on keyboard type. Keystrokes can be recalled instantly by pressing the F-key (or F-key combination) into which it was stored. In addition, Function Keys can be programmed to start a Qmodem Script, the internal Full Screen Editor (see Alt-N/F/V) or even run external programs. The Alt-J command allows the selection of function keys and F-key combinations and the editing of their contents. NOTE: F-Keys are only active in terminal mode. When issuing most Alt- or Ctrl- commands, only the F1 help key is active. Alt-K CHANGE ACTIVE COMMUNICATIONS PORT ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Qmodem can operate on any of eight communications ports; most standard PC/AT machines support two. The active COM port, usually COM1:, can be switched with the Alt-K command. Alt-L CHANGE CURRENT DRIVE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── PC/MS-DOS allows up to 26 disk drives (A-Z). The default drive may be changed to any valid drive with the Alt-L command. If the requested drive is not valid, a message to that effect will be displayed and you will be prompted to select another drive letter. NOTE: Qmodem will automatically update the Alt-L command if the drive designation was changed during the Alt-O command. Alt-W DISPLAY DISK DIRECTORY ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Alt-W produces an unsorted list of the current directory similar to the DOS DIR /P display. The default DIR argument is "*.*", which displays all files. This argument may be changed and may include partial file names as well as the wildcard characters "*" and "?". Qmodem will pause at the end of each screen and prompt for a keystroke to continue the directory display. Pressing <Esc> ends the display. The listing also includes an estimated file transfer time for each file, based on the current communications port speed. NOTE: The Alt-W command only displays current directory contents. To view a different directory, first use the Alt-O command. Alt-F SCRIPT PARAMETER SPECIFICATION ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Following the verification of the script file name, Qmodem will issue a Script Parameter prompt. Script parameters are startup values passed to the script, similar in purpose to DOS command-line parameters and switches. Some scripts require parameters while others do not. The need for parameters and their format, if required, should be indicated in that specific script's documentation. If no parameters are required, press <Enter> and the script will start executing. If parameters are required, type them as documented and press <Enter>. The parameters will be passed to the script, and the script will start executing. NOTE: The script may be canceled by pressing <Esc> then the "A" key. Script cancellation will return Qmodem to terminal mode in the environment set by the script. Up-Arrow SCROLLBACK MODE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── While in scrollback mode, the following keys are active: Up arrow - up one line Down arrow - down one line PgUp - up one page PgDn - down one page Home - top of scroll End - bottom of scroll S - save to disk C - clear scrollback buffer Esc - exit scrollback mode Appropriate messages are displayed when the top or bottom of the scrollback buffer are reached. Alt-D/C DIALING DIRECTORY - CLEAR TAGGED ENTRIES ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Clearing entries previously tagged completely erases the entries and leaves their contents blank. Since note files can be attached to directory entries, this command has two options: ⌡Notes Only⌠ This will delete all notes attached to the tagged entries. ⌡Entries and Notes⌠ This will clear the entries as well as the notes attached to them. Pressing <Esc> will cancel the Clear request and return Qmodem to the Dialing Directory display. CAUTION: Unlike directory entries, Note files are not backed-up when changed. As a result, Notes are deleted permanently and cannot be restored with the Undo command. Alt-Z XON/XOFF PROTOCOL TOGGLE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── XON/XOFF are software-controlled transmit/receive signals which control the flow of text or data. While active, Ctrl-S will stop the flow of data and Ctrl-Q will restart it. XON/XOFF is generally used to control text viewed on the screen or preventing a data buffer overflow. Alt-X EXIT QMODEM ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The Alt-X command is used to terminate Qmodem and exit back to DOS. Three exit options (Y,N,X) are available: Y - Exit Qmodem and Hangup N - Return to Qmodem terminal mode X - Exit Qmodem and DO NOT disconnect the call Alt-C CLEAR SCREEN ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Alt-C erases the screen and resets colors to their default values. Default screen colors are not restored automatically if they were changed during the execution of a script file. Alt-V VIEW A FILE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Alt-V is a Gateway to DOS, used to display or edit a file. The default program or DOS Command invoked with Alt-V is specified with the Alt-N QmodemConfiguration function. As is the case with the Alt-R DOS Shell function, sufficient memory must be available to load the desired program or execute the DOS command. The default program name shown in the displayed prompt may be changed, or any valid DOS command may be typed. When the program or command is completed, Qmodem displays: * Press any key to continue Alt-B BELLS AND BEEPS TOGGLE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Beeps and Bells are used by Qmodem to signal a given event such as a successful connection or the end of a file transfer. The default setting for this feature is specified in the Alt-N Options/Toggles menu. The pitch of the connect, download, or upload tones can be changed from the same menu. Alt-B toggles this feature on or off. Alt-N QMODEM ONLINE CONFIGURATION ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The Alt-N command invokes Qmodem's online configuration program, used to set the various parameters and options which control the program's operation. Alt-M MUSIC TOGGLE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Qmodem recognizes extended ANSI Music commands and will play it through the system's speaker if the following conditions are met: 1) ANSI terminal emulation is active (Alt-G). 2) The music toggle is ON (Alt-M). Extended ANSI Encoded Music string are in the following format: ESC[M.....music codes......^N PgUp UPLOAD (SEND) A FILE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── PgUp initiates a file Upload. Qmodem will display the upload protocol window, from which a file transfer protocol must be selected. Up to ten external file transfer protocols, if implemented, are displayed at the bottom of the window. Select the letter corresponding to the desired protocol. The same protocol must be used by the sending and receiving programs. The remote computer should be ready to receive the file before starting the upload. The protocol selection window will be replaced by the File Allocation and Upload Status windows. Qmodem automatically scans the screen text from the bottom up looking for the first valid file name meeting the FILENAME.EXT search criterion. If found, the name is inserted into the upload file allocation window. If the match was incorrect or none was found, the name must be entered or edited manually. When the filename is correct, press <Enter> to start the transfer. The alternate upload command, Ctrl-PgUp, uses the status line rather than a window to display transfer statistics. PgDn DOWNLOAD (RECEIVE) A FILE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── PgDn initiates a file Download. Qmodem will display the download protocol window, from which a file transfer protocol must be selected. Up to ten 10 external file transfer protocols are displayed at the bottom of the window. Select the letter corresponding to the desired protocol. The same protocol must be used by the sending and receiving computers; make sure that the remote computer is ready to send a file with the selected protocol before starting the process on your end. The protocol selection window will be replaced by the File Allocation and Download Status windows. Qmodem automatically scans the screen text from the bottom up looking for the first valid file name meeting the FILENAME.EXT search criterion. If found, the name is inserted into the download file allocation window. If the match was incorrect or none was found, the name must be entered or edited manually. When the filename is correct, press <Enter> to start the transfer. The alternate download command, Ctrl-PgDn, uses the status line rather than a window to display transfer statistics. Up-Arrow SCROLLBACK MODE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Pressing the Up-Arrow activates the ScrollBack function, which displays a record of the Qmodem session. Using cursor control keys allows up and down scrolling through previously recorded session data. ScrollBack space is set with the Alt-N configuration function and is specified as the maximum number of screen lines to be stored in the scrollback buffer. Ctrl-End SEND TRUE BREAK ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── True BREAK is a special modem signal used to notify the other computer that it is to interrupt its current activity. Certain online services can recognize the BREAK signal and will respond to it appropriately. When Ctrl-End is pressed, Qmodem displays <<BREAK>> on the screen. NOTE: BREAK is a function implemented by the modem. Ctrl-PgDn QUICK DOWNLOAD (STATUS LINE) ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Ctrl-PgDn is an alternative to the PgDn command. File transfer statistics are displayed on the status line rather than in a separate window. Ctrl-Home CAPTURE TO DISK ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The Ctrl-Home function toggles online session recording to a disk file. The default drive, directory, and file name used for session capture are specified with the Qmodem Alt-N command. When session capture is started, a prompt will display the default filename, which may be changed at that time. In addition, Qmodem may be configured to start session recording upon startup. The remainder of this help screen assumes that the session capture feature is not started automatically. If the capture file does not exist, Qmodem will ask for a file name. Pressing Y after entering the file name will create the file; pressing N will allow the name to be changed. To close the capture file, press Ctrl-Home again. Alt-1 BACKSPACE <-> DEL TOGGLE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The Alt-1 toggle controls the character sent when the backspace or ^H key is pressed. Backspace normally generates a ^H (ASCII 8) character when pressed. When using a terminal emulation mode (such as VT100), backspace should generate a DEL character (ASCII 127). Alt-1 toggles the backspace character between these two values. To reverse the state of the BS/DEL toggle for a single character, press Ctrl-Backspace. Alt-2 80x25 SCREEN MODE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── In systems with EGA or VGA graphics, Alt-2 resets the video display mode to 80 characters by 25 lines. Alt-4 80x43 (EGA) 80x50 (VGA) SCREEN MODE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── In systems with EGA or VGA graphics, Alt-4 switches the video display mode to 80 characters by 43 lines (EGA) or 50 lines (VGA). NOTE: In 43 or 50 line mode, the Dialing Directory display will show an additional 10 lines for each page. Alt-5 QMODEM HOST MODE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The Alt-5 command activates Qmodem's Host Mode. Effectively, Host Mode turns Qmodem into a mini Bulletin Board System, complete with electronic mail, file transfer, and Sysop Chat capabilities. The Qmodem Host Mode provides simple features and is not intended to compete with full-featured BBS software packages such as PCBoard (tm). Host Mode requires setup of additional parameters with the Alt-N function, including system type, user time allowance, Sysop passwords, host-specific modem commands, and up/download file directories. External files for logon text, host menus, and user passwords are also required and can be created with the Qmodem Full Screen Editor. Please refer to the Qmodem documentation for complete details on setting up and using Host Mode. Alt-8 HI BIT STRIP TOGGLE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Certain mini/mainframe based communications systems such as CompuServe or the Source use the high bit of each character as a parity bit, resulting in an unreadable display. To view the incoming data correctly, this high bit must be stripped. Qmodem operates in 8 bit mode by default. An 8 or 7 is displayed in the toggle area of the status line, based on the current mode. NOTE: Stripping the high bit off of incoming data will disable ANSI color/animation displays. Alt-0 LOG FILE TOGGLE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Qmodem activity can be recorded in a disk file with the LOG feature. Entry called, time and duration of call, are just a few of the things recorded in the Log file. Each Log entry is Time- and Date-stamped. Alt-0 toggles the status of the Log file. If the Log file is closed, a prompt will be issued to override the default Log file name and start recording. If Log recording is active, the recording will stop and the Log file will be closed. Alt-9 SESSION HARDCOPY TOGGLE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Alt-9 toggles the printer echo. When ON, all screen data is sent to the system printer. Prior to using this command, make sure the printer is connected and ready. If not, the system will display the "Abort, Retry or Ignore" error message. If Alt-9 was pressed by accident, reply "A" to cancel the DOS print request. If the printer was not connected or was not ready, correct the problem and reply "R" to start printing. Alt-= DOORWAY MODE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Alt-= toggles between standard terminal mode and DoorWay mode. In DoorWay mode, all Alt-[key], F-key, and cursor Qmodem commands, except Alt-=, are disabled. The actual key scan codes are sent to the COM port. This feature is only useful if the remote computer is equipped with software that can recognize these keystrokes and act upon them. DoorWay can, for example, allow the use of a full-screen editor remotely. Ctrl-PgUp QUICK UPLOAD (STATUS LINE) ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Ctrl-PgUp is an alternative to the PgUp command. File transfer statistics are displayed on the status line rather than in a separate window. Alt-N/P/A/T CONFIGURATION - PROTOCOLS - ASCII - TRANSMIT ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── ASCII Transmit options allow complete flexibility in uploading the data to the receiver: ⌡Use OUTPUT Translate Table⌠ ON or OFF. If ON, outgoing ASCII data will be translated according to the Output Translate Table (see Alt-A command for additional information on translate tables). The default Qmodem 4.0 translate table causes no character substitution. If OFF, the outgoing ASCII data will not be translated. ⌡Carriage Return (CR) Handling⌠ Three options are available: 1. NONE No special treatment of the CR. (Decimal 13) 2. STRIP All CR's are removed from the file as it is transmitted. 3. ADD LF Adds a trailing LineFeed (Decimal 10) after each CR. ⌡LineFeed (LF) Handling⌠ Three options are available: 1. NONE No special treatment of the LF. (Decimal 10) 2. STRIP All LF's are removed from the file as it is transmitted. 3. ADD CR Adds a leading Carriage Return (Decimal 13) before each Line Feed character. ⌡Pacing Speed⌠ The delay inserted between characters as they are sent, expressed in milliseconds (1/1000th sec.). Default is 0, no delay. May be used to slow down transfers if needed by the receiving system. ⌡Pacing Character⌠ The character which, when received, causes the next line of text is transmitted. If this is zero, then the transfer will not pause between lines of text. See also: End Of Line Character. Also referred to as "Prompt Character" in earlier releases of Qmodem. For example, when uploading to a PCBoard Bulletin Board message base, the prompt character can be specified as a colon ":" (ASCII 58). ⌡Blank Line Expansion⌠ ON or OFF. If ON, causes blank lines (lines with a leading CR and/or LF and no other data) should be expanded to include at least one SPACE as a lead character. ⌡End Of Line Character (EOL)⌠ The character generated at the end of a line by your text editor, usually in response to pressing the <Enter> key to move to the next line. Most editors use the LineFeed character (Decimal 10), and it is usually preceded by a Carriage Return (Decimal 13). Make sure that you specify the correct EOL character for your text editor. Alt-N/P/A/R CONFIGURATION - PROTOCOLS - ASCII - RECEIVE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── ASCII receive options control the process applied to ASCII data received by Qmodem: ⌡Use INPUT Translate Table⌠ ON or OFF. If ON, Qmodem will translate all incoming ASCII data to conform to the Incoming Translate Table. (See the Alt-A command for additional details on the translate table). If OFF, the data is not translated and is saved to disk exactly as it is received. ⌡Carriage Return (CR) Handling⌠ Three options are available: 1. NONE No special treatment of the CR. (Decimal 13) 2. STRIP All CR's are removed from the file as it is saved. 3. ADD LF Adds a trailing LineFeed (Decimal 10) after each CR. ⌡LineFeed (LF) Handling⌠ Three options are available: 1. NONE No special treatment of the LF. (Decimal 10) 2. STRIP All LF's are removed from the file as it is saved. 3. ADD CR Adds a leading Carriage Return (Decimal 13) before each LineFeed. Alt-N/P/A CONFIGURATION - PROTOCOLS - ASCII ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Special parameters may be specified for ASCII (ie, text-only) file transfers. ASCII transfers may be used for capturing textual data to a file or uploading text directly into a message, for example. Due to the nature of ASCII transfers and the various options available, parameters can be specified for both Transmit and Receive operations. Select the desired data transfer type (Transmit or Receive) to access its parameter option menu. Alt-D/E DIALING DIRECTORY - REVISE PREFIXES ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Prefixes or suffixes can precede or follow individual phone numbers. These may be required to access long distance service, add a PBX access code after a number, or "dial 9 to access an outside line" etc... Qmodem allows up to ten prefixes, assigned to the letters A through J. Prefixes are entered / changed within the Prefix Edit window, using standard editing techniques. Use the Up/Dn arrows to move to the desired prefix and press <Enter>. The text within a prefix may contain the following special characters: ^M - <ENTER>, <RETURN> or <CR> carriage return , - Each comma will cause Qmodem to pause .5 second before sending additional data. Once the fields have been entered or changed, pressing the F10 key will update the prefix file permanently. Prefixes may also be used as alternate dialing commands, temporarily overriding the default dial command specified in the Alt-N-M configuration menu. This feature can be used, for example, to add a special modem command prior to dialing, such as activating or de-activating MNP error correction. On a USR HST modem, a dial command which disables MNP would be "AT&M0DT", while "AT&M4DT" would re-establish automatic MNP detection and operation. To use an alternate dialing command defined as a prefix, precede the phone number with an end quote character `, followed by the prefix letter: `A555-1212. Pressing <Esc> cancels all changes and returns Qmodem to the standard directory display. Alt-D/R DIALING DIRECTORY - REVISE ENTRY ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── When revising a Dialing Directory entry, the entry's fields are displayed in a revision window. Fields can be entered or updated using standard editing techniques. To enter/edit a specific field, move to that field with the Up/Dn cursor key, or type that field's key letter, which is either the field's initial, or the uppercase letter within the field, and press <Enter>. Fields allowing multiple, fixed selections are updated with sub-menus. The following fields are present in each entry: ⌡Name⌠ This is the entry's name, such as "Compuserve" or "The Forbin Project". ⌡nUmber⌠ The entry's phone number, which may contain area code, number, and letters for required prefixes or suffixes, ie: 1-319-5551212 or A3195551212B, where A and B are prefix/suffix defined with the "E" command while in the dialing directory. Preceding a prefix with an end quote ` allows temporary override of the default dialing command. For further information, see the Help for the Alt-D/E Prefix Revise command. ⌡Password⌠ An optional password. This field is available to automated logon scripts with the $PASSWORD variable. ⌡Script⌠ The name of a script file linked to this entry, to which control is given when the connection is established. ⌡Baudrate⌠ The speed at which the communications port must operate when this entry is dialed. This should match the highest possible connection speed between the two modems. ⌡Databits⌠ The number of bits required to represent one character or word of information. Usually 8 or 7 when communicating with other personal computers. If unknown, use 8. ⌡pArity⌠ Used to insure the accuracy of received data. May be Odd, Even, or None. ⌡sTopbits⌠ The number of stop bits between data characters, usually 1 or 0. If unknown, use 1. ⌡dupLex⌠ May be Full (F) or Half (H). Also referred to as echo. If the remote system echoes characters, it operates in Full Duplex mode. If it does not, "H" will cause Qmodem to echo the characters locally. Doubled-up characters indicate an incorrect Duplex setting. ⌡pRotocol⌠ The default file transfer protocol for this directory entry. Supported internal protocols are documented in the help for the PgUp or PgDn command. ⌡LastCall⌠ The date this entry was last called (MM/DD/YY) ⌡tiMes on⌠ The total number of successful connections with this entry. Once the fields have been entered or changed, pressing the F10 key will update both the memory and disk copies of the directory, as well as create a backup copy of the previous directory under the .FBK file extension. Pressing <Esc> cancels all changes and returns Qmodem to the standard directory display. Alt-D/S DIALING DIRECTORY - SORT DIRECTORY ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The Qmodem Dialing Directory can be sorted by Name, Telephone Number, or by Total Number of Calls. Name and Number sorts are in ascending sequence. Total Calls sorts are in descending sequence. Thus, entries called most often move to the top of the directory. To perform the sort, type the number corresponding to the desired sort: 1 - Ascending by Name 2 - Ascending by Number 3 - Descending by Total Calls Or press <Esc> to cancel the sort request Following the sort, the previous version of the directory will be saved under the .FBK suffix, and the sorted directory will be saved as the new current directory file. Alt-D/R/A DIALING DIRECTORY - REVISE ENTRY - PARITY ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The parity setting must match that used by the remote computer. Most PC-to-PC communications use no parity while some commercial services may use Even parity. Incorrect parity will produce an unreadable screen display and prevent reliable communications. To select None, Even, or Odd parity, type the initial letter or use the Up/Dn cursor key to move to that value and press <Enter>. NOTE: By definition, if the Data Bits value is 8, the parity setting must be NONE. Press <Esc> to cancel the function and return to the entry revision screen. Alt-D/R/B DIALING DIRECTORY - REVISE ENTRY - BAUDRATE ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── In most cases, the speed of the communications port must be the same as the speed of the modem connection. With certain high-speed modems, the port speed may exceed the connection speed. The speed to be used is the smaller of : 1. The local modem's maximum speed 2. The speed of the modem on the system being called. Qmodem supports speeds of 300, 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, and 38400 baud. To select the speed, use the Up/Dn cursor keys to move to the desired entry, and press <Enter>. Pressing <Esc> will cancel the speed change request and will cause Qmodem to return to the entry revision screen. Qmodem will reset the communication port's speed if configured to do so withthe "Redial Sets Baud Rate" toggle in the Alt-N Options / Toggles menu. With high-speed modems, Redial Sets Baud Rate is usually off and the serial port is locked at the modem's maximum speed. With normal, unbuffered modems, Redial Sets Baud Rate should always be ON. Alt-N/H CONFIGURATION - HOST MODE MENU ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The Qmodem Host mode operates as a mini Bulletin Board System, complete with electronic messages, sysop chat, and file transfer capabilities. The Host mode requires access to specific Menu and User files; refer to the manual for complete details on creating or editing these files. Host parameters are: ⌡Type of System⌠ OPEN, CLOSED, or CALLBACK. An OPEN system allows new callers. A CLOSED system requires that all callers be defined in the User file. CALLBACK causes the system to hang up and CALL the user BACK as a security measure. ⌡Download Dir.⌠ Host mode download drive:\directory. The host mode will only allow downloads from a single directory. ⌡Upload Dir.⌠ Host Mode upload drive:\directory. All files received will be stored in that directory. This may be the same as the download directory. ⌡Maximum time⌠ The number of minutes a user is allowed on the system. After this period expires, the caller will be disconnected. The default is 30 minutes. ⌡DOS Password⌠ The password required to use the Host Mode's DOS Shell command. ⌡Shutdown Password⌠ The password required to shut down Qmodem. ⌡Init Command⌠ A modem initialization string to be used specifically for Host Mode operation. The default string is ATE1S0=0^M. ⌡Answer Command⌠ The modem command required to answer the phone when an incoming call has been detected. With Hayes and compatible modems, this command is "ATA^M". ⌡OK Message⌠ The message returned by the modem following successful command execution. With Hayes and compatible modems, the field should contain the word "OK". ⌡Ring Detect⌠ The message returned by the modem when an incoming call is detected. For Hayes and compatible modems, this field should contain the word "RING". ⌡Busy Command⌠ Command sent to the modem to cause it to go "Off-Hook" when the Sysop logs on locally. This will cause callers to receive a BUSY signal when calling the host while the Sysop is logged on. For Hayes and compatible modems, this command is "ATH1^M". Alt-N/D CONFIGURATION - DIRECTORIES MENU ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The following default paths must be defined to Qmodem: ⌡Upload⌠ The drive/directory path which will be searched for files being uploaded to the remote computer. ⌡Download⌠ The drive/directory into which downloaded files will be stored. ⌡Scripts⌠ The drive/directory path which will be searched for Qmodem script files. NOTE: These are DEFAULT directories. These defaults can be overridden at the time of an upload, download, or when a script is invoked. Alt-N/M/P CONFIGURATION - MODEM - PORT ADDRESSES ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Qmodem supports default assignments for two serial ports, COM1: and COM2:. For PC, AT and compatibles, equipped with IBM-standard adapters, port address and IRQ assignments need not be changed. IBM PS/2 units also support the COM3: and COM4: ports with the following assignments: Port # Address IRQ ---------------------------- COM3: 3220 3 COM4: 3228 3 NOTE: On non-PS/2 machines, port assignments above COM2 -- above COM4: on PS/2 machines -- are non-standard. Refer to the adapter or internal modem's documentation for specific hardware information. Alt-N/M/M CONFIGURATION - MODEM - MODEM COMMANDS ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Special parameters and commands are used to control Qmodem's interaction with the modem such as dialing, hanging up, and recognizing the modem's return codes. Modem parameters are: ⌡Initialization Command⌠ Default: ATZ^M, which resets Hayes and compatible modems to their default operating parameters. This command may vary depending on the modem being used; consult the modem owner's manual. ⌡Prefix Dial Command⌠ Default: ATDT, used to tone-dial a number on Hayes and compatible modems. This also varies depending on modem brand. This command will be sent to the modem immediately before the telephone number to be dialed. Pulse-dialing requires the ATDP command. NOTE: Adding *70 after the ATDT dial command can be used to disable call-waiting on some tone-dialing phone systems. Adding 1170 after the ATDP dial command can be used to disable call-waiting on some pulse-dialing phone systems. ⌡Suffix Dial Command⌠ Default: ^M , a carriage return. This string immediately follows the number to be dialed. ⌡Connect Message⌠ Default: CONNECT. The message returned by the modem when a successful connection has been established. Most modems will also return the connect speed,ie CONNECT/2400. DO NOT include a speed value as part of this message. ⌡Error Messages 1-4⌠ These are messages returned by the modem when the connection could NOT be established, such as BUSY, NO CARRIER, NO DIALTONE, etc.. These messages are documented in the modem manual. ⌡Abort Dial Command⌠ This string will be sent to the modem when a dial request is to be cancelled (ie, pressing <Esc> from the dialing directory screen while dialing is in progress). Most modems accept ^M. Using the string "DTR" is the most effective method if the modem supports "dropping DTR" as a disconnect method. Consult the modem manual for information on this feature. ⌡Hangup Command⌠ For Hayes and compatible modems, the hangup command is ATH^M. Specifying "DTR" is a more effective method if the modem supports "Dropping DTR" as a disconnect method. ⌡Redial Cancel Text⌠ The string sent by the modem which causes the redialer to immediately terminate. If the phone line is used for both outgoing and incoming calls, and you wish an incoming call to cancel dialing in progress, use the word "RING" in this field (for Hayes-compatible modems). Alt-N/M/C CONFIGURATION - MODEM - COM PARAMETERS ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── This menu allows the setting of the following communications parameters: ⌡Default Baud Rate (A)⌠ This is the speed at which Qmodem will open the default serial communication port. This value should match the modem's speed. Supported speeds are 300, 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200 and 38400bps. The default baud rate is 1200. ⌡Default Data Bits (B)⌠ Data bit values are usually 8 or 7, with 8 being the most common. This setting must match that of the software operating on the remote computer. Most PC Bulletin Board Systems operate with 8 data bits, the default value. ⌡Default Parity (C)⌠ The parity scheme used to insure the reliability of the data being received. Parity values are None, Odd, or Even. This value must also match that used by the computer being called. Most BBS use No parity, the default value. ⌡Default Stop Bits (D)⌠ Stop bits are used to separate characters. Again, this value must match the remote computer's setting. Most BBS use 1 stop bit, the default value. ⌡Command Before & After Baud Chg (E&F)⌠ These two strings are sent to the modem before and after the serial speed is changed. The default value is ^M, a carriage return. Non-standard modems may require different commands. ⌡Cycle Delay (G)⌠ The number of seconds Qmodem must wait to redial following a failed connection, such as a BUSY signal. The default value is 45 seconds. ⌡Timeout Delay (H)⌠ The number of seconds Qmodem will wait for a connection after dialing a number. When this period has expired, Qmodem will instruct the modem to hang up. The default value is 60 seconds. NOTE: most modems have an internal timeout value which may be different from the one assigned here; check the modem manual. ⌡Modem Command delay (I)⌠ The number of milliseconds delay between characters in modem commands. The default is 0. Some high-speed modems may require a delay (1-25) value if commands are not recognized and do not return an OK message. ⌡Serial Port (J)⌠ The address (1-8) of the communication port to which the modem is attached. The default is 1. Port addresses higher than 2 must be configured separately in the Modem/Port address menu. NOTE: The default Speed, Parity, Data bit and Stop bit values are not fixed. Defaults can be overridden in each dialing directory entry to match the settings of the remote computer. Alt-N/M CONFIGURATION - MODEM MAIN MENU ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The Modem main Menu has three selections: ⌡Communication Parameters⌠ These are standard parameters governing the operation of the communication port and its interaction with the modem. ⌡Modem Commands⌠ Modem-specific commands and parameters ⌡Port Addresses⌠ Communication Ports Hardware parameters Alt-N/C/C CONFIGURATION - COLORS - CUSTOM COLORS ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Custom Colors may be assigned to screen displays such as window text and border, screen border, primary and secondary screen text, full-screen editor standard and highlighted text etc... To assign a color combination, select the desired element by typing the corresponding letter (A-Q) or using the Up/Dn arrow key and pressing <Enter>. The color selection screen contains a color selection chart and a Qmodem screen sample showing all displays in their current colors. Select new colors by moving the cursor within the color selection chart. Pressing <Esc> or <Enter> will return to the display selection menu. Alt-N/C CONFIGURATION - COLORS MAIN MENU ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The first-level Colors Menu has five options, four of which are preset color combinations. The Blue, Red, and Purple options are combinations favoring these shades. The Monochrome option should be used on single-color CRT monitors or non-CRT displays which are totally compatible with the IBM Monochrome Display Adapter. The LCD Laptop Shades option should be used for computers equipped with Liquid Crystal Displays which do not support high-intensity fields and emulate this feature with different low-intensity shades. The Custom Color option allows total flexibility in the assignment of screen colors, and has its own help screen. Alt-N CONFIGURATION - MAIN MENU ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Certain Qmodem default parameters must be must be configured to reflect the environment in which the program will operate. Configuration parameters fall into the following categories: ⌡Colors⌠ Foreground/Background color selection for text, windows, messages etc... ⌡Modem⌠ Modem and Communication-dependent parameters. ⌡Directories⌠ Drive and directory path information for uploads, downloads, and script files. ⌡Host⌠ Parameters specific to Qmodem's Host Mode operation. ⌡Protocols⌠ Information specific to external file transfer protocols. ⌡Files⌠ Drive, path, and filenames for help, screen capture, session log, backscroll capture, and view files. ⌡Options⌠ Basic operational parameters, switches, and run-time options. Default values are assigned to many parameters, and assume that Qmodem will operate on an IBM PC with a Hayes Smartmodem 1200 modem attached to the first serial port (COM1:). Directories, Files, and many Options must be customized manually to reflect the Qmodem operating environment. Unless changes occur to the environment, this process need only be done once. Configuration parameters are stored in the QMODEM.CNF file. ⌡MENU NAVIGATION⌠ Major menu categories are arranged in a horizontal menu on top of the Alt-N screen. To select a category, type its first letter: M=Modem, O=Options, etc..., or use the Right/Left cursor keys to highlight the desired category and press <Enter> or the Down Arrow key. A vertical "pop-down" menu will be displayed. Selecting options within these menus is similar (use the option's letter or cursor to the option and <Enter>). Some menu items are preceded by a letter or number, which can also be used to select that item. NOTE: Certain Alt-N menu options or are followed by an asterisk * or a down arrow. The asterisk signifies that the changes made to the item will go into effect immediately. The down arrow indicates that additional menus exist for that option, which can be selected by pressing <Enter>. The Colors menu is an example of both asterisk and down arrow options. All selections are immediate, and can be saved with Alt-N/E/S. Only the Custom Colors option has a down arrow for additional selections. When no asterisk appears by the selection name, you must save the change, exit Qmodem, and re-start it for the new option(s) to become active. ⌡TYPING / EDITING FIELDS AND SETTING PARAMETERS⌠ There are three methods for setting parameter values: ⌡Text Strings⌠ Cursor to the parameter, press <Enter>, and type the data required; such as modem initialization string, dialing command, file names etc... ⌡Toggles⌠ Cursor to the parameter and press <Enter> as required to view and select the option. ⌡Cursor-select⌠ Cursor to the parameter, press <Enter>, and use the cursor keys to select the desired option. ⌡EXITING THE MENU(S) AND SAVING THE CONFIGURATION⌠ Pressing <Esc> will move back up one menu level at a time. To save the changes at the Main Menu level, select "Exit", then select "Save Changes" and <Enter>. Exiting the Alt-N menu entirely DOES NOT save the configuration changes permanently. To save changes to the QMODEM.CNF file, go to the Main Menu's Exit option and use the "Save Changes" option to record the new configuration. NOTE: Memory configuration changes cannot be implemented without stopping and re-starting Qmodem. When such changes are made, appropriate messages will be issued. Alt-N/E CONFIGURATION - EXIT MENU ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The Configuration Exit Menu has two options: ⌡Abandon⌠ Leave the configuration menu and do not save the changes. Pressing <Esc> while at the main menu level has the same effect. This allows changes to be tested before being implemented. ⌡Save Changes⌠ Save the changes to the QMODEM.CNF file and exit the menu. NOTE: If changes were made to Qmodem memory allocation an exit prompt will be displayed at this time, indicating that Qmodem may be stopped and re-started to put these changes into effect. Alt-N/O/C CONFIGURATION - OPTIONS - CHARACTERS ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Special characters are used as field separators or function indicators: Date Separator - Forward slash / Time Separator - Colon : Beeps & Bells - Single note (ASCII 13) ANSI Music - Double note (ASCII 14) Directory Tag - Check mark √ Entry Note Tag - Triplet ≡ The single and double note characters can cause problems when copied directly to a printer with a PrtSc function. To change a separator or indicator value, select the desired character and press the Up or Down cursor key to cycle though other available character values. When the desired character is displayed, press <Enter>. To return a character to its default value, press <Esc>. Alt-N/O/D CONFIGURATION - OPTIONS - DELAYS ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Delay values affect the timing of certain Qmodem operations: ⌡Status Windows⌠ Most toggle or immediate commands have an accompanying window showing the change in Qmodem's status. The value in this field, expressed in 1/100th sec., controls the duration the windows' display. The default is 300 (3 seconds). CAUTION: A low value in the Status Window delay field will cause a very short display which may not be noticed. ⌡File Transfers⌠ File transfer errors such as Short/Long blocks can occur on high-speed, buffered modems when the COM port rate is fixed at a higher speed than the CONNECT rate -- for example, when operating a USR HST or Hayes V9600 modem with a COM port speed of 9600 or 19200, and when connected to a slower 1200/2400 modem --. Set this option to 20 (seconds) to allow data and the end-of-block message to pass through the buffers before Qmodem times out. This delay is not generally needed if the serial port speed is not set above 2400bps. Alt-N/O/S/C CONFIGURATION - OPTIONS - SOUNDS - CONNECT TONES ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Qmodem produces a 3-note chime following a successful connection. The default frequencies for the three notes are 1200, 1400, and 1600 cycles. These can be changed to suit the user's preferences. All 3 notes are played following each change. To change a value type the desired number, enter the new value, and press <Enter>. Alt-N/O/S CONFIGURATION - OPTIONS - SOUNDS MENU ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Qmodem can use Beeps and Bells to indicate a successful connect or the completion of a file transfer. The default state is defined in the Alt-N Options/Toggles menu. Outside the configuration menu, this feature can be toggled on or off with the Alt-B command. The Sounds menu allows changes tothe pitch of these sounds to suit users' preferences. Three sounds can be configured: ⌡Connect Tones⌠ This multi-note jingle has its own custom menu. ⌡Up/Download⌠ A single beep will be produced at the completion of each file transfer. The frequency of the sound can be changed. A sample beep will be heard after each change. The default frequency for the file transfer completion tones is 1200 cycles. Alt-N/O/M CONFIGURATION - OPTIONS - MEMORY MENU ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Qmodem allows user-specified memory allocations for four specific storage areas: The scrollback buffer, variables used by script files, the Qmodem internal editor, and download buffers. These values can be changed to meet varying requirements: ⌡Lines of ScrollBack⌠ Memory is allocated as the maximum number of lines which can be stored in the scrollback buffer. Each screen requires approximately 1,900 characters of memory. For example, to recall the last 480 lines (twenty 24x80 screens) would require approximately 38k of memory. ⌡Script Variables⌠ While executing a script, memory must be available for the storage of variables. Requirements vary, based on the needs of the scripts being executed. A reasonable starting value is 3 or 4K. If scripts are NOT used, no memory need be allocated. ⌡Editor Memory⌠ The Qmodem internal editor stores the entire file being edited in memory for performance reasons. Memory requirements depend on the size of largest file to be edited. If only small files will be edited, a good starting value is 6 to 8K. ⌡Download Buffer⌠ Downloaded data is stored into the download buffer. When the buffer is full, it is copied to disk. Each buffer is 128 bytes, and from 8 to 240 buffers can be allocated. If receiving to a fast hard disk or to a RAM disk, use the smallest allocation. A low allocation when downloading to a diskette will reduce transmission efficiency. Large allocation are at the expense of system RAM memory. ⌡Overlay Buffer⌠ Available ONLY in the overlay version of Qmodem. The default value is 0K. Increasing this value will reduce disk activity during the loading of program overlay files at the expense of memory. If Qmodem seems too slow, this should be increased in 5-10K increments until execution speed is satisfactory. A good starting point is around 20-40K. Since the above memory allocations cannot vary during program execution, a change cannot be effected without stopping and restarting Qmodem. After such a change has been made, a warning message to that effect will be displayed. Upon exiting the menu, Qmodem will also issue an exit prompt to remind the user of this condition. If memory changes were made while online, Qmodem can be stopped with the Alt-X-X command and restarted with the QMODEM /R command, which will preserve the connection. NOTE: Memory available to Qmodem may vary greatly depending on the operating system's own requirements, and resident programs (TSRs) loaded. If Qmodem is unable to find sufficient memory, it will re-allocate it using a best-fit algorithm and will issue a warning message to that effect. Alt-N/O/T CONFIGURATION - OPTIONS - TOGGLES MENU ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Qmodem toggles consist of 16 parameters which can be set ON or OFF to control specific aspects of Qmodem operation. To change the toggle setting, type the toggle's highlighted letter or cursor to it and press <Enter>. ⌡Xon/Xoff⌠ A software flow control protocol used in the text and ASCII transmissions. Not usually needed. This toggle can be changed with the Alt-Z command. ⌡BIOS Video⌠ When OFF, Qmodem writes directly to screen memory. When ON, display speed will be slower. ON must be specified if Qmodem operates under multi-tasking software such as DesqView, DoubleDOS, or Windows. ⌡PCJr Mode⌠ Must be ON if Qmodem is run on an IBM PCJr computer. This forces Qmodem to access the serial port with slower BIOS routines. ⌡Beeps & Bells⌠ Activates or deactivates Qmodem audible signals for connect and up/download completion. This toggle can be changed with the Alt-B command. ⌡Linefeed after CR⌠ When ON, causes Qmodem to add a linefeed (LF) after each carriage return (CR) character. This toggle should be ON if text lines are overwritten on the screen. This toggle can be changed with the Shift-Tab command. ⌡ANSI Music⌠ If ON, Qmodem will play ANSI music if found in the incoming data. This toggle can be changed with the Alt-M command. ⌡CTS Signal⌠ When ON, implements hardware handshake between modem and computer. Required for high-speed and error-correcting modems. NOTE: Qmodem will check for the presence of the CTS signal when started. If CTS is not detected, an error message will be displayed, giving you the option to continue operating without CTS handshake, or to wait for the CTS signal to become active (ie., in case the modem was turned off or disconnected from the computer). ⌡CTS When Writing⌠ When ON, causes Qmodem to maintain the CTS (Clear To Send) signal while writing to disk (during a download). On 80286 or 80386 computers, this option will increase the download transfer rate by .5% to 6% as data is being accepted from the modem during disk writes. WARNING: Avoid using more than 80 Download Buffers. This option may cause data loss on some systems or configurations. Try this option carefully to see if it can be used on your system. ⌡Redial Sets Baud Rate⌠ When ON, causes Qmodem to set the serial port speed to the speed of the modem connection, as returned in the modem's CONNECT message. When OFF, maintains the existing serial port speed. ⌡Del=Backspace⌠ Alternates the backspace value between the true backspace character and the 'Del' character. This toggle can be changed with the Alt-1 command. ⌡Auto Start Log⌠ When ON, causes Qmodem to record activity to the log file immediately upon startup. If OFF, logging can be manually started with the Alt-0 command. ⌡Snow Checking⌠ Should be ON to prevent snow on older CGA displays. ⌡Growing Windows⌠ If ON, causes windows to grow or explode when displayed. If OFF, windows pop-up on the screen instantly. ⌡Status Line⌠ Control the usage of the last screen line as a Qmodem Status Line. When OFF, the last line is available to display incoming data. ⌡FIFO during Shell⌠ If ON, allows 16550 buffered serial chips to accumulate data during a SHELL operation. ⌡Keypad Emulation⌠ Determines the characters generated by the keyboard numeric pad when keyboard numeric lock (NumLock) is ON. If Keypad Emulation is ON, Qmodem generates the proper key or escape codes, based on the terminal emulation in effect. If Keypad Emulation is OFF, Qmodem will generate standard numeric values. Alt-N/O CONFIGURATION - OPTIONS MENU ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Options are the collection of run-time parameters which control the operation of Qmodem. These parameters fall into the following six categories: ⌡Toggles⌠ Switches for features such as video mode, audible alarm, etc... which may ON or OFF. This option has a detailed sub-menu. ⌡Memory⌠ Qmodem memory allocation specifications. This option has a detailed sub-menu. ⌡Sounds⌠ Fine-tuning of event-specific beeps and bells. This option has a detailed sub-menu. ⌡Delays⌠ Window display and file transfer delay values. This option has a detailed sub-menu. ⌡Emulation⌠ Default terminal emulation. When the cursor is located in this field, pressing <Enter> cycles through the available emulation modes: ANSI, VT100, and TTY. TTY or ANSI modes are the most common. DEC VT100 emulation may be required if connected to a Host computer requiring this terminal type. ⌡Characters⌠ Character values used as field delimiters or function indicators in the Qmodem screens. This option has a detailed sub-menu. Alt-N/F CONFIGURATION - FILES MENU ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Qmodem requires access to certain predefined files or programs whose paths and names are specified in this menu: ⌡Online Help⌠ The Qmodem online help file, distributed as part of the Qmodem program. The default name for this file is QMODEM.HLP. Example: C:\QMODEM\QMODEM.HLP ⌡Screen Dump⌠ The file to which Qmodem screen copies will be saved. Qmodem automatically appends the .DMP suffix to the specified filename. Example: C:\QMODEM\SCREEN.DMP ⌡Capture⌠ The file which will contain the Qmodem Session data if this feature is used. Qmodem automatically appends the .CAP suffix to the filename. Example: C:\QMODEM\CAPTURE.CAP ⌡Log⌠ The file to which Qmodem activity is logged, if this feature is used. Qmodem automatically appends the .LOG suffix to the filename. Example: C:\QMODEM\QMODEM.LOG ⌡Backscroll⌠ The file to which the backscroll buffer is copied. Qmodem does not add an extension to this filename. Example: C:\QMODEM\SCROLL.SAV ⌡View⌠ View is in fact a DOS Shell which passes control to an external program. The View field defines the command used to invoke that program, as if typed on the DOS command line: C:\UTILITY\LIST Two Qmodem-only commands can be used in the View field: @FSE or @EDITOR. Specifying @FSE calls the Qmodem Internal Editor for file viewing/editing The @EDITOR command requires the name of an external editor following it, ie. @EDITOR QEDIT If the View field is left blank, the Qmodem Internal Editor will be used (such as editing scripts or attached notes from the phone book). NOTE: The @EDITOR and @FSE commands should ALWAYS be followed by a space. NOTE: Qmodem will append new data to the screen dump, capture, log, and backscroll files if they exist. If they do not, a prompt for their creation will be issued when the corresponding command is issued. File names may be changed when these recording features are invoked. Alt-N/P CONFIGURATION - PROTOCOLS - EDIT PROTOCOLS MENU ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Five fields are required to define an external protocol: ⌡Select Character⌠ The letter or digit used to select this protocol while in the upload/download protocol selection window. Characters A,C,F,G,R,X,Y and O are reserved for internal protocols. ⌡Protocol⌠ The written name of the protocol as it will appear in the upload/download selection window. ⌡Upload BAT⌠ The name of the upload batch file for that external protocol. ⌡Download BAT⌠ The name of the download batch file for that external protocol. ⌡Filename Prompt⌠ Y or N depending on protocol requirements for downloads. Y will cause Qmodem to prompt for a filename to be received. N assumes that the filename will be sent as part of the received data and handled automatically by the protocol. NOTE: Qmodem passes the COM speed, port number, and filename to the protocol batch file as parameters %1, %2, and %3. The filename (%3) may not be required depending on the external protocol selected. Refer to the external protocol's own documentation for additional details. Alt-N/P CONFIGURATION - PROTOCOLS MENU ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Qmodem supports up to 10 external file transfer protocols. Common external protocols include Zmodem, Sealink, and Kermit. External protocols may be required to provide file transfer capabilities not available with Qmodem's built-in protocols. These protocols are implemented with separate programs whose installation steps are external to Qmodem. Please refer to the external protocol's documentation for additional installation and customizing information. When installed properly, these external protocols are available directly from the Qmodem file transfer protocol selection window. Existing protocol names are displayed in the window. To create or edit a protocol definition, select the desired protocol letter and press <Enter>. Blank lines are not allowed between items in the external protocol list.
